Relaxed Outdoor Autumn Family Photoshoots
I love autumn, really love it. There is something truly special about it. The air feels crisp, the trees burst into so many different colours and there is a quiet magic in the air. Autumn brings the perfect setting for photographs that feel relaxed, natural and filled with the kind of warmth you can only find when spending time outdoors together. A relaxed outdoor adventure is not about stiff smiles or carefully arranged poses. It’s about connection, laughter and those perfect in between moments that you will want to remember forever.
Why is autumn the perfect time for a family photoshoot? What to expect from my outdoor sessions, how to prepare and why these images will be treasured for years to come.
Why Choose Autumn for Your Family Photoshoot?
Autumn is a gift for gorgeous colours everywhere. The burnt oranges, golden yellows and deep reds create a stunning natural backdrop. Even a simple walk in the park can turn into a setting straight from a storybook. Families often find autumn more comfortable than the height of summer too. The cooler air means children are less restless and parents feel at ease without the glare of strong sunshine. There is something so satisfying about crunching leaves underfoot, wrapping up in cosy layers and wandering through woodland paths. All of this lends itself beautifully to a relaxed photoshoot that feels more like an adventure than a formal session.
What Makes My Outdoor Autumn Photoshoots Different
Nothing is forced. We go for a walk and explore the woods whilst I capture moments along the way. Letting little ones explore and allowing the session to flow in a way that feels relax and stress free. My outdoor adventure photoshoots often involve:
-
Exploring nature together whether that is a walk through the woods, throwing leaves in the air, or climbing on fallen logs.
-
Relaxed sessions are not hurried, giving families time to settle, laugh and really enjoy themselves.
-
Telling Your Family’s Story rather than focusing on perfect poses.
-
Playfulness chasing each other, holding hands, or even stopping for a snack becomes part of your story
These sessions are as much about the experience as they are about the images. Families often leave feeling like they have had a wholesome afternoon together, with the bonus of photographs full of natural not forced emotion.
Preparing for Your Autumnal Photoshoot
The best outdoor adventure sessions feel effortless but a little preparation can help make everything run smoothly. Here are a few things to consider:
1. Clothing Choices
Layers work wonderfully in autumn. Think knit jumpers, cosy scarves and boots or wellies that can handle a muddy path. Avoid large logos or overly bright colours that may clash with the natural tones of the season. Coordinating outfits can look lovely, but there is no need for everyone to match exactly. Earthy shades, muted tones and subtle patterns often photograph beautifully against autumn backdrops.
2. Timing
Light is everything in photography. Autumn brings softer sunlight which can be incredibly flattering, especially during the golden hour just before sunset. Morning sessions also work well when the air feels fresh and the day is just beginning.
3. Embracing the Good Ole British Weather
British autumns are famously unpredictable. One minute the sky may be blue, the next it could be drizzling. Rather than worrying about this, see it as part of the adventure. A light rain shower can bring with it playful puddle jumping and umbrellas that add cuteness to your images.
Why Families Love Outdoor Autumn Photoshoots
Many parents say they feel more comfortable outdoors than in a studio. The pressure lifts when you realise there is no need to sit perfectly still or get everyone smiling at the same time. Instead, the focus is on being together, which feels achievable and enjoyable.
Children in particular thrive in this environment. They are free to run, climb and explore, which means their true personalities shine through. Parents join in the play, which results in images filled with genuine connection and warmth.
For families who prefer a relaxed lifestyle, an outdoor adventure photoshoot is perfect choice. It’s less formal and more about embracing the season, the weather, wellies and all, and the little quirks that make your family unique.
My 4 Favourite Locations that Work Beautifully in Autumn
The setting is so important. It creates the mood of your photographs. Some wonderful autumnal locations that I love are:
Macclesfield Forest – a new discovery and I was blown away by how magical it is. Tall trees, leaf covered paths and beams of sunlight peeking through branches.
Abney Hall Park – open spaces where little ones can run and explore freely, wander down paths through woodlands, past ponds, a waterfall and meadows.
Fletcher Moss –the stunning botanical gardens lead to woodland trail adventures.
- Styal Woods – a magical woods with a trail that leads up to Styal Mill
Making the Most of Your Session
To get the very best from your autumnal photoshoot, it helps to approach it with the right mindset.
Let go of perfection. Children may get muddy, hair may blow in the wind and your toddler may decide that sticks are more interesting than smiling for the camera. Don’t worry as this often provides the perfect shot!
Engage with your children. Talk to them, play games, lift them in the air, or whisper something funny in their ear. This keeps the energy flowing naturally..
Why These Photos Matter
Family life moves quickly. Children grow, seasons change and what feels ordinary now will one day be a treasured memory. A relaxed outdoor family photoshoot captures not just how you looked, but how life felt.
When you look back at these images years from now, you will remember your little ones feeling free and enjoying life. These are the moments that become part of your family’s story. Let’s tell your family’s story together
