The Best Days Out in Greater Manchester for Young Families

When you’re planning a family day out, you want somewhere that keeps everyone smiling, right? Somewhere that wears the children out (in the best way), gives you lovely memories together, and maybe even a few photo worthy moments you’ll treasure forever.

As a family photographer in Greater Manchester, I spend a lot of time exploring beautiful spots and family friendly venues. From countryside charm to hands on museums, Greater Manchester has so much to offer young families looking for adventure, fresh air, and fun together.

Here are some of my favourite days out perfect for little explorers and grown-ups alike.

1. The Science and Industry Museum, Manchester City Centre

If you’ve got curious kids who love asking “why?” about absolutely everything, this is the perfect spot. The Science and Industry Museum brings learning to life in the most exciting way.

There are interactive exhibitions, historic machinery, and a dedicated hands-on space for children where they can press buttons, pull levers, and see how things work. It’s educational, but also genuinely entertaining. Plus, it’s free to enter which makes it even better for a family day out.

2. Smithills Open Farm, Bolton

If your children love animals, Smithills Open Farm is always a hit. You can bottle feed lambs, stroke rabbits, ride donkeys and even have a go at milking a cow. It’s interactive, friendly, and the staff are brilliant with young families.

There’s also a tractor ride around the farm, an indoor play area for rainy days, and a café with homemade ice cream. It’s one of those places where you leave with muddy shoes, big smiles, and a phone full of photos.

3. Tatton Park, Knutsford

Tatton Park feels like a proper day out. There’s a historic mansion, a working farm, deer park, adventure playground, and beautiful gardens to explore. It’s ideal if you want to balance a bit of countryside calm with child friendly fun.

You can spend the morning meeting animals, have lunch at the Stableyard Café, then head to the playground for an afternoon runaround. It’s also a photographer’s dream with endless picture perfect corners for family portraits or natural shots of your children playing.

4. Chester Zoo

Yes, it’s technically just outside Greater Manchester, but it’s such a popular choice for local families that it deserves a mention. Chester Zoo is world famous and truly magical for children.

With over 35,000 animals and stunning themed areas, it’s an immersive experience from start to finish. There are picnic areas, cafes, and quiet zones for when you need a break from all the excitement. For little ones, spotting elephants and giraffes in real life is something they’ll never forget.

5. Abney Hall Park, Cheadle

Abney Hall Park is one of those hidden treasures that families fall in love with straight away. Nestled in Cheadle, it’s full of wide open spaces, winding woodland paths, and plenty of spots for little explorers to run free.

There’s a duck pond, stepping stones, and lots of interesting nooks that children adore discovering. On sunny days, it’s perfect for picnics and outdoor play and in autumn, the crunchy leaves make it extra magical for family walks.

The park is also home to The Abney Café, which is brilliant for a coffee stop or a well earned slice of cake after a good run around. It’s peaceful, easy to get to, and ideal if you fancy a slower paced day out surrounded by nature.

6. Museum of Illusions, Manchester City Centre

For a day packed with wonder and giggles, the Museum of Illusions is an absolute treat. It’s full of interactive exhibits, optical illusions, and mind bending experiences that children (and adults) can’t resist.

From rooms that appear to defy gravity to funhouse mirrors and 3D holograms, it’s a playground for curious minds. It’s indoors, so it’s perfect for rainy Manchester days, and it makes for some truly memorable photos of the whole family laughing and exploring together.

7. Dino Falls Adventure Golf, Manchester

For a bit of outdoor fun with a twist, Dino Falls Adventure Golf is a roaring good time for the whole family. This dinosaur themed mini golf course is full of colourful obstacles, trick holes and, of course, plenty of dinosaur fun that little ones adore.

It’s perfect for children who love a bit of adventure, and adults enjoy it too especially when you get competitive! The course is well maintained, easy to walk around, and there’s a café nearby for snacks or a quick drink after your round.

It’s a brilliant option for a family day out that combines fresh air, gentle exercise, and a lot of laughter. Plus, it’s a great spot for some playful photos as everyone navigates the course together.

8. Heaton Park, Prestwich

Heaton Park is the kind of place where you can easily spend an entire day without realising. It’s one of the biggest municipal parks in Europe and a total gem for families. There’s a lake for duck feeding, a fantastic play area, and a small animal centre that’s perfect for little ones who love meeting furry friends.

Bring a picnic blanket, a football, or just your camera for some spontaneous family snaps under the trees. There’s also a café for when you fancy a cuppa and a slice of cake because every good family day out deserves one.
