When thinking about what to wear for a family photoshoot. First things first wear something that you feel comfortable in. That doesn’t mean that you should all rock up in your jogging bottoms and onesies (unless you want that kind of shoot!!) You should look good together without looking as though you’ve tried too hard.

You want to look like you just happen to coordinate, not like you went shopping specifically to find family photo outfits.

The idea here is to pick a colour palette or a colour family, and wear something that shows your individual style.  A good way to find your colour palette is to pick out one patterned piece that has two or more colours in it, then build the other outfits from that one. Don’t be afraid of patterns, but try to avoid having several busy patterns going on all in one picture. One busier pattern, along with solid colours and more subtle patterns works well.. Remember to avoid logos, words or characters as these can date a photograph. Whilst Peppa Pig may be your little one’s life at the moment she will become a distraction on a top in the portrait. Try to avoid baggy clothes as these can tend to make a person look larger than they actually are. V neck tops are especially flattering for ladies too.

Accessories can add extra colour and textures.

Bring scarves, hats, different hair accessories such as headbands or even flowers. But be careful not to over accessorize too much jewellery for instance can be too busy. The good thing about accessories are that they are easily taken off or on to add a different look.

With outdoor photo shoots and our great British weather accessories such as funky patterned or block colour brollies, wellies with long patterned socks/tights. Shoes too can add a pop of colour to the photograph. Think ballet shoes, converse, boots not old trainers as they too like logos can date a family photograph. If you have little girls think twirly dresses so that I can capture movement too.

As a photographer I like to help my clients choose their outfits. Mums in particular can get very stressed so I ask them to send me a quick phone photo and we discuss the options to ensure that you all look your best. Bring a couple of changes of clothes so I can get a variety of shots.

Here’s some shops that offer classic modern family clothes which are perfect starting points for inspiration.
